The amount of transport planes required depends on the weight of the divisions to be transported. Paratroopers battalions weigh 0.5 and paratroop support companies 0.1. One transport plane has a carrying capacity of 2.0, and so could carry a division of 4 para battalions, or 3 para battalions with several support companies. If the air drop order planes total too little carrying capacity for the paratroops assigned, the transports will make several trips to ferry the paratroops, exposing them to more enemy attacks and causing the troops to arrive in separate waves.
Tribal knowledge suggests it's simply 1 plane per division. @bitmode could you please take a look what's the reality?

You are right; a transport plane has a carrying capacity of 1 and a division by default has a transport size of 1.
unit_size_factor_for_paradrop
which generals can have. It would change the transport size of a division to 1 / (1 + unit_size_factor_for_paradrop).Edit: nevermind, the modifier is called paratrooper_count_per_plane
(which makes much more sense than the internal name) and is used in some DLC exclusive stuff.

The only place I can find is the glider command ability. It's a global modifier, right? Theoretically, I could put it in static_modifiers and scale paratrooper plane requirements to, say, at least require 20 planes for a division? I know it won't be possible to vary it with division size...

It is attached to the general, you can't make it global.

The only exception to this is an unused modifier calledunit_size_factor_for_paradrop

Hi there,
Returning to the game after a break almost since Man the Guns came out. I am a big fan of paratroops (as you can tell from my avatar).
I seem to recall that a few years back the calculation was that the batallions in a paratrooper division weighed X, support equipment like artillery weighed Y and a plane had Z capacity. So if you increased the number of batallions in a paratrooper division, you'd need more than one transport plane in order to paradrop it? Has this been changed? Can you elaborate on "a division has a default size of 1"? Is that ANY paradropable division, regardless of its composition?

So the wiki is wrong? Do we have a definitive answer?

Yes, 1 regardless of composition. This should be very easy to test in-game, right?
I'm not a huge fan of paradrops, so I'm not sure if it changed at some point. The air rework would be a likely candidate where this might have happened.

I don't "recall" any changes to the paratroops. Of course, I'm struggling to remember what I had for breakfast.

Well, that's disconcerting, to say the least. It's not even a paratrooper battalion that has a transport size of 1, it's the entire division ? So a 20 btn division requires 1 transport plane, as does a 1 btn division ?
